Monarch's 11 year old All-Stars went 3-2 to finish in 3rd place in the District 2 All-Star Tournament. The Coyotes started the tournament in strong fashion by defeating Westminster 13-3 on July 8th. The next night, the Coyotes lost to Northern Lights, a traditional little league powerhouse. The loss sent the Coyotes into the losers' bracket, which did not faze the team. On July 10th, the 11s beat Platte Canyon 9-8 in dramatic fashion. The lead changed hands several times before the young Coyotes won the game in the bottom of the 6th with 3 consecutive hits. The excitement carried into the next night when the 11s rallied to beat traditional powerhouse South Boulder 9-7. The win put the 11s in the semi-finals and meant the 11s would face Northern Lights again on Saturday July 12th. Unfortunately, Northern Lights was too strong and Monarch was ousted, but not after completing one of the most successful runs in Monarch All-Star history.
Congrats to the following 11 year old All-Stars for a great tournament: Zach Wagner; Jack Stephens; Mike McCrudden; Sam Horton; Shawn Kirkman; Donato Ruscitti; Mark Bowen; Spence Mittelman; Alex Holtz; Cory Phelps; Hayden Knox; Andrew Barlow; Ben Ward; Austin Cracraft (Alternate); Kylor Johnson (Alternate); Bill Stephens (co-manager); Giovanni Ruscitti (co-manager); and Jack Wagner (coach).
Cubs Win Majors Championship! The top seeded Cubs defeated the Phillies 16-5 on June 13th to win the MLL Majors Division end of season tournament championship. The Cubs entered the tournament as the top seed with a 13-7 regular season record, but with 3 of those regular season losses coming to the Phillies. The two clubs also met in the semi-finals of the playoffs, with the Cubs winning 12-9. So, the Championship game promised to be an exciting game. And the teams did not disappoint. The game started out as pitching duel, and the teams traded several leads. Going into the bottom of the 4th, the score was tied 5-5 and it was anyone’s game. The Cubs exploded in the bottom of the 4th and took control of the game, winning 16-5. The Cubs finished the season 16-7.
TIGERS WIN AAA CHAMPIONSHIP! Congratulations to the AAA Tigers for winning the end of the year championship. The Tigers path to the championship was truly an inspirational one rivalling that of any Rocky movie. After finishing the regular season in sixth place, the Tigers played much improved solid team baseball for the final week and captured the championship. During their storybook playoff run, the Tigers played and defeated the top three regular season teams, the #3 Giants, the #1 Padres, and the #2 Red Sox. In the championship game, the lead went back and forth and the Red Sox put up a great fight. Like most of the playoff games, that final game could have gone either way. Congatulations also to the regular season champs, the Padres, for narrowly defeating the Yankees in the consolation game.
Congratulations also to all the AAA teams for their outstanding performance in interlock games with a 19-9-1 record. This is only the second year that MLL AAA teams have competed against these other leagues and the teams all performed great. It was obvious to anyone watching this final week just how hard all the kids and coaches in this division worked throughout the season. The play was much improved from the start of the season and the teams were all very close in talent. Each child and coach from each of the 7 AAA teams, the Dodgers, the Twins, the Giants, the Yankees, the Padres, the Red Sox and the Tigers should feel good about their tremendous efforts this season.
